Bark Imprint 7

Bark Imprint 7
A ceramic wall hanging made from white clay with a verdigris stain.
Artist: Binda Colebrook
About Bark Imprints
Bark fragments found on the forest floor are lovingly transformed into a solid crest for our times.
Clay is gently pressed into the veins and crevasses of foraged slabs of bark that have been shed by the trees. The resulting imprint is rubbed with stains, inks and glazes, then fired twice.
The contours and elevations of the Bark Imprint create a topographical map of the tree’s former protective layer. Each imprint bears the marks of the individual tree.
“We are left with a remnant that invites us to remember that the tree let go of this bark for a reason, and it will in its turn nourish the forest plants through its decay. It invites us to move through the grief of this moment and embrace the evolving, emergent state we are in.”

About the artist
Binda Colebrook is an artist and a psychotherapist. Her art practice has shifted in the last two years. She recognized that a lot of work prior to the pandemic year of 2020 was grief work, stuck in a repetitive exploration and expression of suffering and hurt.
The slowing down that 2020 invited led Binda to read more, go out into the woods more and engage with nature more. What she found along the way was the power of connection to Self, and to our planet, the mother of us all.
Binda now puts her energy into finding the center within and encouraging others to do the same. She does that by making work that invites the opening of the sensory gates to the metaphysical background.
